We’ve got nails acting like hammers and hammers acting like nails. But if a nail tries to be a hammer, or a hammer tries to be a nail, neither can do its job—they’re both useless. Hammers and nails each have unique purposes, just like people do. Trying to be something we’re not makes us ineffective.
Knowing who we are—and embracing that—helps us live with intention and meaning. I know who I am: I’m a hammer, and nothing else. I need to broaden my view and end the misconception that I see everything as a nail. Hammers don’t just dent; they also smooth. Both are needed, and together they fulfill their purpose.
